Active Voltage Conditioner Selection Guide

Eliminate your process interruptions and SAVE.

Q: Do you protect the complete facility or do you protect the critical loads?

A: It is possible to protect all the loads in a facility or on a process line; however it is not always the most cost effective solution. If your critical loads* are >85% of the total load then it is economical to protect the complete load. When protecting the whole load there are AVC options for Medium Voltage or Low Voltage.

*Critical loads are defined here as loads that cannot shutdown for even a second without creating huge delays and large costs.

It is usually more economic to protect each critical load or group of critical loads separately. This helps keep the cost down but it will require more engineering to determine the best areas to protect. For load dedicated low voltage solutions click here.

The AVC will:

  • Continuously correct 10% voltage deviations
  • Continuously correct for voltage unbalance
  • Correct for 1 and 3-phase sags for a minimum of 30 seconds.
  • Reduce your maintenance costs.

Reduce Your Maintenance Costs

Most North American manufacturing plants experience many voltage sags throughout the year even if only a few of these result in production stoppages. Each voltage sag causes electrical stress to sensitive components. After installing AVC protection, many customers have found their annual electrical maintenance costs have been greatly reduced. The components see constant smooth voltage and avoid the stresses that can lead to premature failure.

Cost of Operation

At medium voltage in out-door houses and including the air conditioning the units have been measured to have operating efficiency greater than 98%. At low voltage this figure is typically closer to 99% . At worst the AVC units will increase electrical consumption by 1-2%. In practice because the AVC balances phase voltages continuously and these typically vary by 1-2%, the AVC effectively reduces the utility bill so its overall incremental cost of operation is minimal.
